(Washington, D.C., February 17, 2010) – The International Food Information Council Foundation today sent letters offering support and resources to five members of President Obama’s new Task Force on Childhood Obesity.
In the letters sent to Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and Task Force Chair Melody Barnes, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and the Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady Susan Sher, Foundation President and CEO David Schmidt highlighted the variety of resources the Foundation has to offer to help combat childhood obesity including extensive consumer research, an established network of more than 350 nutrition and food safety experts as well as its web sites www.foodinsight.org and www.kidnetic.com. He also expressed hope for future collaborative efforts.
In the letters Schmidt stated, “We applaud the First Lady’s Let’s Move national public awareness effort, and are prepared to meet her request of having the nonprofit sector help children become more active and eat more healthfully.”
Childhood obesity prevention has been a key focus of the International Food Information Council Foundation since it was founded in 1991. In 2002, the Foundation launched its own childhood obesity prevention initiative, www.kidnetic.com, which is a healthful eating and active living Web site for children and their families, as well as for health professionals and educators. The site and its companion components are intended to encourage children and their parents to adopt active, healthful lifestyles. Extensively researched with children and parents, kidnetic.com addresses food, fun, fitness, and feelings; the research behind kidnetic.com is published in the peer-reviewed literature. This unique site offers activities to get children up and moving while they are online and also provides healthful recipe ideas, a Real-Life Guide for Parents, and a tested, 13 lesson-based curriculum Leader’s Guide for educators and health professionals.
